Ancient deaths examined through modern methods

Ancient Autopsy follows Professor Suzannah Lipscomb as she re-examines the deaths of Cleopatra, Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Tutankhamun. Forensic pathologist Dr. Richard Shepherd joins a project combining historical scholarship, original sources, digital autopsy techniques and practical experiments. Each of the four figures supplies a separate investigation into how familiar explanations developed and what evidence can support them.

The Cleopatra chapter examines the account of death by snake, including cobra venom extraction and alternative theories of political murder. Alexander’s episode considers poison, trauma and disease, bringing a Babylonian tablet and discussions with virology specialists into the inquiry. The programme presents competing explanations as subjects to investigate.

From a missing emperor to the boy-king’s remains

Genghis Khan’s chapter considers the uncertainty around his death and disappearance. Tutankhamun’s investigation uses a digital autopsy, chariot experiments and access to Howard Carter’s diary. The different kinds of surviving evidence shape what each case can examine, from written traces to physical remains and reconstructed mechanisms of injury.

The series is also presented internationally as Ancient Autopsy: Mysteries of the Dead. Its central format brings science and history together around long-debated deaths. The investigation of a possibility is part of that structure; the programme’s experiments and reconstructions supply ways to test an account rather than eyewitness records of the ancient event.
