Athletes at the centre of public argument
Everybody Hates explores the origin stories of polarizing figures in sport. Each instalment profiles one athlete, connecting a public reputation with the career and circumstances behind it. The series is concerned with how sporting personalities become people whom large audiences admire, criticize and discuss far beyond the result of a game or fight.
VICE’s announced premise shifts attention from deciding whether hostility is deserved to explaining how these figures acquire such divisive identities. That framing connects individual careers with the larger cultural conversations attached to them. The anthology format allows the same broad subject to be approached through different sports and different kinds of fame.
