A dictatorship recalled by the people around it

Dictator: The Hitler Interviews builds its account of Adolf Hitler through recorded testimony from people who met and knew him. The contributors range from former classmates to political associates and people close to him during the war. Their recollections provide the series’ central material, bringing the surrounding circle into an examination of how he acquired and exercised power.

The broadcaster describes interviews held in archives across Europe, Russia, America and elsewhere, including material not broadcast for generations. SBS also identifies later testimony from the last living associates, brought together with earlier recordings. The project therefore draws on interviews made at different times, rather than a single set of contemporary conversations.

Populist, Tyrant and Fanatic

The three chapters are titled Populist, Tyrant and Fanatic. The opening part considers the early political appeal described by friends and supporters, including the role of stagecraft and the roots of his antisemitism. The second moves into the dictatorship, following accounts of violence and oppression once Hitler held state power.

The wartime section brings accounts of strategic decisions and their consequences for Germany and the battlefield. Recollections from people present in the bunker form part of the final phase. Across the series, the testimony concerns both Hitler and the people who supported, enabled, observed or opposed him.

An archive-led historical investigation

SBS credits Rob Coldstream, Rosie Schellenberg and Samantha Stewart as directors and lists three episodes of approximately 45–48 minutes. Its presentation identifies distressing war imagery among the programme’s content. The archive-led approach gives the series a particular historical perspective: it examines a dictatorship partly through the memories and explanations left by those within its orbit.
