An artist investigates Silicon Valley’s ideas about humanity

Grayson Perry Has Seen the Future sends the artist to California to examine how artificial intelligence and robotics might change human life. The two-part Channel 4 documentary uses Perry's curiosity about people, values and identity as a route into an industry often described through technical achievement and financial growth.

Perry meets established industry figures, young start-up founders and critics of the direction AI is taking. Those encounters create a conversation between ambition and doubt, asking whose vision of the future is being built and what assumptions about human needs sit inside it.

Empathy, motivation and a response made through art

The second chapter examines the motivations and values of Silicon Valley's technology leaders. Its meetings include an Anthropic co-founder and a scientist developing empathetic robots. The interest lies in the beliefs driving the products as well as the capabilities being demonstrated.

Perry finishes by making an artwork inspired by the journey. Directed by Neil Crombie, the series connects an artist's response with a wider discussion about technology's place in society. The artwork gives the enquiry a personal outcome rather than turning the visit into a single forecast of what AI will inevitably do.

Grayson concludes his tour of Silicon Valley by considering the motivations of the men behind the technology, such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos - and how their values might be challenged. He meets a scientist working on empathetic robots which offer a more human-centric alternative to the priorities of the industry and encounters one of the key players in AI, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, grappling with the possibility that AI could be shaped in such a way to offer a more optimistic future.
