A career explored through songs

JAŸ-Z IN 8 brings Jay-Z into conversation with longtime friend and producer Rick Rubin. The eight-episode series travels through the musician’s back catalogue, using individual songs as points of entry into his life and working methods. Lyrics, influences and personal experience become connected parts of the discussion.

Rubin’s playlist provides the structure. Instead of attempting to summarize a career only through its biggest public milestones, the pair use the music itself to open up questions about how it was made. The recurring conversation gives the series an intimate format centred on creative explanation.

Brooklyn, family records and early influences

The opening episode revisits the first track from The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, Jay-Z’s fifth studio album. The conversation turns to growing up in Brooklyn’s housing projects and the family record collection that influenced his earliest musical interests. A single track therefore becomes a route back to the experiences around it.

That movement between a finished recording and its background is the series’ main appeal. Musical choices can be discussed alongside formative experiences, rather than separating biography from craft. For viewers interested in songwriting, the conversation offers a chance to hear an artist reflect on the connections in his own work.

Listening for the creative process

Rubin is credited as director as well as appearing in the conversations. His established relationship with Jay-Z is part of the format, allowing the programme to proceed as an exchange between people with a shared musical history. The series keeps returning to the relationship between what listeners hear and the decisions behind it.
