Preta Gil’s life in music and public view
Meu nome é Preta follows the personal and professional life of Brazilian singer Preta Gil. The four-part documentary connects her career with questions of representation, freedom and belonging. Her family background and the expectations attached to it form part of a story that also follows her own public voice as a performer and activist.
Filha da Tropicália, the opening episode, returns to her childhood in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, with Tropicália and the dictatorship forming the surrounding context. Its account includes racism, the weight of a famous surname and a loss that changes her life. The second moves into adulthood in São Paulo, her relationship with Otavio Muller and becoming a mother to Francisco Gil.
