Aircraft understood through the changes they made possible

Planes That Changed History explores 125 years of aviation through influential aircraft and the engineering behind them. Produced by Atomic TV for National Geographic, the series combines archive material with interviews involving historians, pilots and aviation specialists. Schematic 3D models explain design features that are difficult to see in conventional footage.

The military stories include the Supermarine Spitfire, Avro Vulcan, B-17 and F-117 Nighthawk. Their chapters connect aircraft design with specific operational demands, from wartime combat to long-range flight and reduced radar visibility. The focus is not simply on a machine's appearance but on the capability that made it significant.

Speed, heavy lifting and mass passenger travel

Concorde introduces the race for supersonic passenger travel, while the Douglas DC-3 and Boeing 747 trace changes in commercial flying. Other chapters examine the Harrier's ability to hover and the Airbus Beluga's specialised cargo role. The range prevents aviation history from becoming only a history of fighter aircraft.

The Chinook chapter adds a heavy-lift helicopter to the collection. Across the series, the link between a design and its task provides the recurring argument: speed, lift, range and handling matter because they allow people to transport, supply or fight in ways that were previously difficult or impossible.
