Resolve to Solve with Miles O'Brien

Science reporting focused on people testing solutions

Resolve to Solve with Miles O'Brien follows the journalist across communities and research sites where people are working on climate, water and health problems. Produced by Arizona PBS, it brings together scientists, engineers, farmers, conservationists and public officials. The stories focus on the practical work between an idea and a solution that can operate in the world.

One strand follows attempts to reduce methane from cattle; another looks at beavers as agents of landscape restoration. The series also examines cities adapting to extreme heat and the opportunities and tradeoffs associated with offshore wind. These projects put ecological processes and engineered systems alongside one another.

From river negotiations to medical research

Water scarcity takes O'Brien to the shrinking Colorado River, where farmers and water managers face decisions about sharing a limited supply. Other reporting investigates geothermal energy and work on brain disorders. The PBS programme description adds Antarctic glacier interventions and wildlife restoration in Argentina to its wider geographical range.

The television and streaming versions are packaged differently: Arizona PBS announced five one-hour programmes, with half-hour episodes for digital platforms. Prime Video lists ten episodes, including separate stories on cattle methane and rewilding in Argentina. Those formats explain why episode counts can differ without describing two unrelated series.

Episodes

Fighting Cow Methane With Seaweed

Cow burps are heating the planet, and one dairy farmer's seaweed fix might help cool it down.

S01 · E02

Dam it; Beavers to the Rescue

Beavers are nature's engineers who are reviving areas of the drought-stricken West.

S01 · E03

Extreme Heat: Arizona to Australia

Miles O'Brien examines innovative ways communities and scientists are responding to extreme heat, traveling from Arizona to Australia to explore cooling strategies, heat-resilient design, and efforts to protect vulnerable people from rising temperatures.

S01 · E04

Powering Change: Offshore Wind

Miles O'Brien travels to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where offshore wind is being developed as a major source of clean energy and a potential economic engine for the region. The episode examines the technology, the local political and economic stakes, and the challenges of building a large-scale offshore wind industry.

S01 · E05

Return of the Wild in Argentina

Kris Tompkins went from Patagonia CEO to conservation visionary, spending her fortune with late husband Doug to protect over 16 million acres in Chile and Argentina. Miles O'Brien joins her in Argentina's Ibera wetlands as jaguars, extinct there for a century, are captured, collared, and released into the wild. It's a bold experiment in reversing extinction that comes with risk, loss, and hope.

Inside Antarctica's Doomsday Glacier

Thwaites Glacier is melting faster than any glacier on Earth, and its collapse could raise global sea levels by feet, not inches. Miles O'Brien sails to Antarctica aboard a Korean icebreaker with scientists drilling through 3,000 feet of ice to reach the water below and explore a radical idea: an underwater curtain that might buy the world some time before the "Doomsday Glacier" gives way.

Colorado River Reckoning

A century ago, seven states divided the Colorado River based on faulty math. Now, as climate change shrinks the snowpack that feeds it, the river delivers a third less water than it once did, and the states can't agree who should cut back. Miles O'Brien meets farmers fallowing fields, negotiators at odds, and an accidental sea, all caught in the reckoning over America's most overallocated river.

Geothermal: Drilling Deep for Power

Beneath our feet lies a nearly endless supply of clean energy. Miles O'Brien traces the unlikely rise of enhanced geothermal power, from a Cold War-era experiment at Los Alamos to Texas oil fields, where veteran frackers repurpose drilling technology to tap hot rock instead of crude. With billion-dollar startups and oil majors now betting on it, geothermal may finally be ready to reshape the grid.
