Secrets Of Ancient Structures

2025SeriesDaniel Oron
Watch on other platforms

Ancient buildings examined through archaeology and design

Secrets of Ancient Structures asks how past societies built monuments that remain striking today. The series combines archaeological discoveries with newer investigative technologies, moving between the practical achievement of construction and the beliefs attached to a building. Daniel Oron is credited as director, with Mia Fothergill named in the programme listing.

Battling Giants brings together the Colosseum, the Great Wall of China and Malbork Castle. Secrets of the Shrines turns to the Pantheon, Mont Saint-Michel and a Roman gate later used as a church. The thematic structure compares buildings with different histories while asking how their purposes shaped the engineering.

The sky, the afterlife and stories told about buildings

Cosmic Alignment examines Angkor Wat, El Castillo and Newgrange through relationships with the sky and the Sun. Dealing With the Devil considers legends of supernatural help associated with ambitious designs. The series places those stories within the cultural history of structures rather than treating a legend as an engineering explanation.

Beyond the Tomb moves to the Taj Mahal, Speyer Cathedral and Lycian rock-cut tombs. It connects architecture with remembrance and ideas about death, widening the programme's enquiry from how buildings stand to why communities invest so much labour and meaning in making them.
