Dean Potter’s search for an edge

The Dark Wizard explores the life of climber, BASE jumper and highline walker Dean Potter. The four-part documentary places exceptional physical achievements beside the personal turmoil surrounding them. Its account follows the attraction of risk, the ambition to move beyond established limits and the strain those pursuits placed on relationships.

The Death Consequence, the opening chapter, follows Potter finding escape and joy through extreme climbing while building a reputation for new ascents and records. Dying to Flying then follows the escalation of his ambitions as another climber begins to threaten his position. Achievement and insecurity develop alongside one another.

Rivalry, isolation and a change of direction

The third episode focuses on an intensifying rivalry with Alex Honnold and growing distance from those closest to Potter. The fourth turns to a new relationship and his immersion in wingsuit flying. The series’ progression connects changes in activity with changes in the personal world around him.

Contributors include Honnold, Jen Rapp, Cedar Wright, Dean Fidelman and other people connected with Potter’s life and work. Their accounts broaden the portrait beyond the public image of a solo performer, bringing friendships and the climbing community into the story.

A Sender Films portrait

Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen direct the Sender Films production, with Halle Johns producing. Josh Lowell and Josh Minor edit, and Dan Deacon supplies the music. The filmmakers’ focus joins sporting history with a personal account, examining how the same drive could fuel celebrated feats and difficulty in life beyond them.
