The Dinosaurs

The rise and fall of a prehistoric dynasty

The Dinosaurs follows the long history of the animals that dominated terrestrial ecosystems before their eventual catastrophe. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, the Netflix documentary comes from executive producer Steven Spielberg, Amblin Documentaries and the team behind Life on Our Planet. The focus is the changing fortunes of a whole group across deep time.

The four-part structure begins with Rise, whose story follows a small creature hatching in a dangerous Triassic world. Conquest then examines the opportunities created by a mass extinction, as dinosaurs diversify, grow larger and develop new forms of defence. Evolution is presented through changing environments and competition rather than a static parade of famous species.

Evolutionary success under changing conditions

Empire moves into a Cretaceous setting shaped by high seas, islands and new ecological opportunities. Fall follows a world in which dinosaurs occupy a dominant position while a threat develops beyond Earth. The chapter names provide a rise-and-collapse narrative, but the underlying subject is how environmental forces repeatedly alter the conditions of survival.

Showrunner Dan Tapster and series director Nick Shoolingin-Jordan describe the project as an opportunity to give the dinosaur story more space after Life on Our Planet. Netflix's programme description places its main historical span at roughly 165 million years, distinguishing the animals' time on Earth from the much longer evolutionary history surrounding it.
