Military power begins behind the battlefield

War Machine: World War II examines the connection between industrial capacity and fighting power. The four-part series follows weapons from the systems that produce and supply them into the environments where they are used. Directed by Tristan Beacroft and narrated by Jessica Douglas-Henry, it comes from WildBear Entertainment.

War on Land ranges from the M1 Garand rifle to armoured vehicles and artillery, connecting design with production and transport. War at Sea follows the changing balance between submarines, battleships and aircraft carriers, with shipbuilding and control of supply routes central to its account of naval conflict.

Air power and the logistics that sustain it

War in the Air examines the different demands placed on bombers and fighters, including range, destructive capacity, speed and precision. The programme treats technical change as part of the strategies available to military planners, linking an aircraft's characteristics with the role it can perform.

The War of Resources broadens the final chapter to raw materials, food, medicine and secure supply lines. That shift reveals the organising idea of the series: an arsenal depends on a continuing system of manufacture and distribution, and the ability to sustain that system can be as consequential as the performance of an individual weapon.
