Understanding war through the art it leaves behind

When The War Is Over follows Rachel Griffiths as she explores how art helps people understand, process and respond to the trauma of war. The five-part series moves between films, songs, paintings and books, considering creative works that have influenced public attitudes to conflict. Art provides the route into history rather than serving only as illustration.

The programme connects well-known works with the people who create, interpret or live with their legacy. Griffiths meets veterans, artists and historians, bringing different forms of experience into the same inquiry. The focus is on how a society makes sense of conflict after the fighting through cultural memory and expression.

Gallipoli, Vietnam and the Frontier Wars

The series’ range includes Gallipoli, Vietnam and Australia’s Frontier Wars. These are distinct conflicts with different places in public memory. The programme uses creative works to ask how attitudes can change and how a national story may be challenged by an image, a performance or an account that reaches a wide audience.

Contributors include filmmaker Peter Weir, artist Ben Quilty and musician Jimmy Barnes. Their different disciplines extend the investigation across several ways of reaching people. The series is interested in what creative expression can do emotionally and publicly, including its capacity to question familiar myths or open space for reconciliation.

A five-part Mint Pictures production

Mint Pictures produces the series, listed by ABC as five half-hour episodes. Sophie Meyrick and Daniel King direct, with Ili Baré producing and sharing writing credits. Griffiths is presenter and narrator as well as an executive producer. The compact chapters allow the series to approach a large subject through selected works and encounters.
