Craig Ferguson: American on Purpose

2026Series
Watch on other platforms

An adopted country viewed from within

Craig Ferguson: American on Purpose follows the comedian across the United States to explore the ideas and contradictions attached to American identity. Ferguson became a citizen in 2008, and his personal experience gives the five-part journey its continuing point of view. History, conversation and humour connect his encounters with the country’s 250th anniversary.

The route moves from recognizable landmarks to less expected settings, with monster-truck rallies and Ellis Island among the places named in CNN’s description. Comedians, entrepreneurs, historians and other Americans contribute to an account of belonging that remains open to different experiences of the same country.

Five themes in contemporary American life

The First Amendment chapter considers the boundaries of free speech. Individualism ranges from Jay Leno’s garage to the Everglades, while Patriotism brings encounters with Jason Biggs and a World War II veteran who landed at Omaha Beach. The subjects connect founding ideals with different ways they are lived and expressed.

Capitalism follows Ferguson attempting to launch a business, with contributors including Tiffany Haddish, Daymond John and Vivian Tu. Becoming American turns to the immigrant experience through fellow naturalized citizens such as KT Tunstall and Salman Rushdie. These chapters connect abstract ideas with particular lives and practical experiences.

A personal journey from IPC and CNN

The Intellectual Property Corporation produces the CNN series, with Morgan Fallon as showrunner. Ferguson’s role is both host and participant in the search for meaning around citizenship. The programme brings his own choices into conversation with people whose ideas of American life can differ sharply from one another.
