Sports as part of American cultural history

Decades in Sports traces six decades of competition through the cultural and political changes surrounding it. The series connects athletes and championships with developments that changed how sport was played, watched and discussed. Its broad focus ranges from the television revolution and civil-rights movement of the 1960s to the power of social media around contemporary stars.

Each decade supplies a distinct chapter, bringing famous performances into the conditions of their time. This makes broadcasting, public debate and social change part of the sporting account. A record or a championship is presented within a larger history of who receives attention and how audiences connect with athletes.

Athletes, broadcasters and the people recording the games

The interview lineup includes broadcasters Bob Costas, Al Michaels and Andrea Kremer, football players Lynn Swann and Drew Pearson, basketball figures Bill Bradley and Diana Taurasi, and marathon pioneer Kathrine Switzer. Their perspectives bring experience of competing and experience of interpreting sport into the same retrospective.

Journalists and analysts including Jessica Mendoza, Malika Andrews, Bomani Jones and Michael MacCambridge also contribute. The range helps connect the memories of particular moments with the wider shifts that made them matter beyond a single game. The six-part structure moves across sports rather than following one league or athlete.

A continuation of the Decades format

Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Mark Herzog executive produce the CNN series, continuing the partnership with Playtone behind earlier decade-based documentaries. Here the chronological format is applied to sport, joining memorable competition with the changing public world in which it took place.
