A prisoner and a movement across the world

Free Nelson Mandela follows Mandela’s journey from activist and revolutionary to prisoner and negotiator, alongside the international effort to secure his release. The three-part documentary connects his life with the people who built the anti-apartheid movement. His imprisonment is central, while the campaign extends the story across political organizations, public protest and popular culture.

The first chapter follows the campaign led by his friend Oliver Tambo after Mandela is sentenced to life imprisonment. Musicians join the wider movement, bringing the demand for freedom into new public settings. The series places those external efforts alongside Mandela’s changing circumstances inside prison.

How protest became a cultural force

The second part includes Mandela’s relationships with prison guards and the persecution of Winnie Mandela, while the song Free Nelson Mandela becomes an international anthem. The third turns to Sun City and the Wembley concert, connecting musical activism with political and economic pressure on apartheid South Africa.

Director James Rogan describes interviewing former Robben Island prisoners, political figures, activists and musicians involved from the 1960s onwards. Their accounts bring personal sacrifice and cultural action into a history whose best-known image is Mandela walking free after 27 years. Previously unseen material adds to the archive through which that broader struggle is retold.

A Rogan Productions documentary

James Rogan directs, with Samora Tikly and Xinlan Rose producing. Rogan Productions and GroupM Motion Entertainment make the Channel 4 series, distributed internationally by BBC Studios. Its approach connects the man, the political campaign and the cultural movement as parts of the same route towards release and democratic change.
