History’s missing pieces and unresolved trails
Shadows and Dust follows investigations into things lost, hidden or incompletely understood. Its subjects range from disappeared treasures and fossils to a fugitive, a shipwreck and historical technology. The connecting idea is the trace left behind: investigators examine testimony, surviving material and new studies to reconsider an unresolved story.
The Stolen Amber Room begins with panels removed from Catherine Palace during the Second World War, while The Florentine Diamond follows a disappearance from Vienna after the First World War. Both stories connect a valued object with upheaval, speculation and a long search for its whereabouts.
A fugitive, a shipwreck and vanished fossils
The D. B. Cooper chapter revisits the 1971 hijacking and the evidence left after a parachute escape. Other investigations turn to the Santa Maria off Hispaniola and the disappearance of Peking Man fossils during wartime. The scale of the missing object changes, but records and material clues remain central to each account.
Further themes include contested burial sites associated with Jesus, the lost army of Cambyses and the durability of Roman concrete. These are different kinds of historical problem: a disputed location, an account of a vanished force and the reconstruction of an old material. The series brings them together through the methods and persistence of investigation.
