A rescue becomes an international confrontation
Tampa: The Turning Point revisits the August 2001 crisis after the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa rescued 433 asylum seekers from a damaged Indonesian vessel in the Indian Ocean. Australia’s refusal to let the survivors land turned a rescue into an eight-day standoff. The three-part documentary follows the humanitarian emergency and the political choices made around it.
The opening episode includes Afghan refugee Abbas Nazari boarding the fishing vessel with hundreds of others. His experience supplies a personal route into an event subsequently debated through government policy and national borders. The series combines survivor accounts with the ship’s captain, politicians and international experts.
