A divided community seen through a friendship
Bucks County, USA follows Evi and Vanessa, two fourteen-year-old friends with opposing political beliefs in Pennsylvania. As national disputes reach their hometown, their friendship provides a personal centre for a wider portrait of community division. The five-part documentary was filmed over four years in a county where competing political loyalties sit close together.
The story moves between the girls and other residents trying to live with deep disagreements. PBS describes their shared challenge as finding a path forward for the community. Schools become one of the places where those disagreements turn into direct encounters between neighbours, parents, students and elected officials.
