A network of carers discovers a repeated story

Doula: A True Crime follows the case of Kaitlyn Braun, who contacted more than forty doulas over nine months in 2022. She described a pregnancy following sexual assault and claimed to be carrying a stillborn child. The documentary examines how people offering compassionate support began to discover a repeated and deceptive pattern.

Some doulas helped through telephone and video calls; others attended in person and offered round-the-clock care, often without payment. As their experiences began to connect, the response developed into a campaign to draw official attention and a widely shared TikTok counter-offensive. The story moves from private encounters to collective action.

From exposure to questions about responsibility

Directed by Nathalie Bibeau and produced by Muse Entertainment, the three-part CBC series begins with an online relationship and a hospital visit that disrupts the account its participants have been given. A later chapter includes access to Braun herself, adding her account to those of the people affected.

CBC frames the documentary around empathy and its possible limits, including questions raised by an unregulated caring profession. Rather than treating the case solely as an extraordinary deception, the series examines what it means to offer intimate support, recognise harm and seek an explanation without erasing the experiences of those drawn into it.
