Wildlife beyond the historic landmark
Europe's Wild Kingdoms looks at European heritage sites through the animals that live in and around them. Familiar landmarks become the starting points for a natural-history journey: Mont-Saint-Michel in France, Bran Castle in Romania, the Alhambra in Spain and Duart Castle in Scotland all appear in the producer’s description. The series asks how places shaped by centuries of human activity also provide a home for wildlife.
The premise connects architectural heritage with the surrounding natural environment. War, settlement and changing uses have all contributed to the histories of these sites. The programme approaches their present-day biodiversity as another part of that history, inviting viewers to look beyond buildings and monuments to the living landscapes around them.
