The State of Man

Following the route from ordinary videos into the manosphere

The State of Man begins with a personal alarm for journalist Marc Fennell: online recommendations led his children from Pokémon videos towards manosphere content. His three-part investigation follows the kinds of algorithmic paths young viewers can encounter, asking how ideas about masculinity circulate and who profits from them.

Fennell follows material about fitness, money and self-improvement as it connects with increasingly divisive messages. The series examines influencers alongside the platforms and industries that help those messages travel. Its subject is therefore a system of recommendations and commercial incentives, as well as the personalities appearing on screen.

An online industry with consequences beyond the screen

The investigation considers the vulnerabilities of boys and young men seeking identity and belonging, and the effects on girls, women, families and relationships. ABC frames the programme around the forces shaping modern masculinity while also examining possible responses, keeping social consequences connected to the online material.

The series is a Helium Pictures and New Mac production, with Fennell as journalist and producer and Melissa Maclean as executive producer and director. Its personal starting point broadens into a global enquiry, moving between what a parent encounters at home and the machinery turning insecurity into an audience and a business.
